“Prosecutors have repeatedly made the news recently, embarrassing themselves along with their police buddies –

Las Vegas Deputy District Attorney David Schubert resigned on April 1, 2011 after he  was arrested on suspicion of buying cocaine. He was pulled over in Las Vegas with cocaine in the car, a semi-automatic 9mm pistol, four ammunition magazines, and two boxes of bullets (more here). Ironically, he was the same prosecutor who had recently prosecuted Bruno Mars and Paris Hilton when they were arrested for cocaine possession.”

State Crimes Against Democracy

New research in the journal American Behavioral Scientist (Sage publications, February 2010) addresses the concept of “State Crimes Against Democracy” (SCAD). Professor Lance deHaven-Smith from Florida State University writes that SCADs involve high-level government officials, often in combination with private interests, that engage in covert activities for political advantages and power. Proven SCADs since World War II include McCarthyism (fabrication of evidence of a communist infiltration), Gulf of Tonkin Resolution (President Johnson and Robert McNamara falsely claimed North Vietnam attacked a US ship), burglary of the office of Daniel Ellsberg’s psychiatrist in effort to discredit Ellsberg, the Watergate break-in, Iran-Contra, Florida’s 2000 Election (felon disenfranchisement program), and fixed intelligence on WMDs to justify the Iraq War.1

BEIJING, Jan 30, 2011 (AFP) – China’s state broadcaster is facing questions after Internet users spotted that footage in a report on air force manoeuvres in a national newscast was taken from the 1980s Hollywood film “Top Gun.” China Central Television, or CCTV, aired the footage in a January 23 report on a People’s Liberation Army Air Force training exercise, showing a plane firing a missile at another. The second aircraft plane was destroyed in a fiery explosion, and the dramatic footage was shown in between interviews with air force officers.

MINNEAPOLIS — Former Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura sued the Department of Homeland Security and the Transportation Security Administration on Monday, alleging full-body scans and pat-downs at airport checkpoints violate his right to be free from unreasonable searches and seizures.Ventura is asking a federal judge in Minnesota to issue an injunction ordering officials to stop subjecting him to “warrantless and suspicionless” scans and body searches.
